MERCHANT PADDY is the nap choice in the Ladbrokes’ Andersontown Road Beginners Chase at Downpatrick this afternoon.
Charles Byrnes’ charge is a useful sort on his day and, with two outings over fences under his belt, should now be poised to strike. He made little show first time up behind Dancing Hero at Gowran Park, but there was distinct promise in his latest effort, even if only managing tenth behind Shazand at Punchestown.
The selection jumped and travelled nicely through the contest, to the third last, and then ran on reasonably well from the final fence, after appearing to get his second wind.
He has shown plenty of ability in the past, taking a bumper at Thurles, a novice hurdle at Chepstow and beating Paul Nicholls’ Forest Pennant, and a handicap hurdle at Fairyhouse.
Philip Rothwell’s ex-pointer, Fairwood Bob, is the one to beat in the Best Football Prices Bumper.
He may have failed to score between the flags, but made an excellent start on the racecourse when three parts of a length runner-up behind Hey Porter at Gowran Park with the subsequent winner, Winterwood, a further eight length away in third.
Willie Mullins’ Drive On Regardles is fancied to make a winning debut over flights in the Ladbrokes’ Northern Ireland EBF Maiden Hurdle.
A tough and durable sort, the dual bumper winner has reportedly schooled well in anticipation of this test.
Once-raced In The Zone could provide the solution to the Ladbrokes’ Telebetting Maiden Hurdle.
Mouse Morris’ inmate performed with a lot of promise when fifth behind the smart Beau Michael at Limerick and, hopefully, can build on that.
