Taoiseach invites president to Ireland and Offaly

Thursday, March 18, 2010

TAOISEACH Brian Cowen has invited President Barack Obama to visit Ireland.

At a dinner in the White House last night he said he hoped to afford Mr Obama the same welcome past presidents were given when they crossed the Atlantic.

"May I say how much we hope to see you, the First Lady [Michelle] and your family, in Ireland soon. I am sure you will have heard of the great welcome accorded to your predecessors.

"If you visit us, I can assure you of an equally warm welcome, especially in Co Offaly, where I have some influence," he said.

Earlier, Mr Obama joked about his own Irish ancestors, which were only been discovered during his presidential campaign.

Leading golfer Pádraig Harrington was among the diners for the event where the traditional bowl of shamrock was presented. Mr Cowen said the major-winning golfer could offer tips on the President’s swing.

The Taoiseach also paid tribute to the champion of Irish American politics, senator Ted Kennedy, who died of brain cancer last year.

"This year on St Patrick’s Day, we are particularly mindful of the absence of our dear and loyal friend, Senator Ted Kennedy.

"Ted loved to celebrate St Patrick’s Day and at times like this we miss his enthusiastic presence."
