Height of taste on Tower Hill

Saturday, August 28, 2010

Windy Heights, Tower Hill, Glounthaune, has views of Cork harbour and pristine landscaped gardens.

THERE’s a lot of house-proud owners up at Tower Hill – a high, almost hilltop, setting in Cork’s Glounthaune, by the landmark 19th Century folly called Fr Mathew’s Tower.

There are a few dozen one-offs on this south-facing hill, with Cork harbour views, and the last couple of decades has seen houses built here almost recede in their landscaping. Many on the lower section are all-but invisible and private now, in their own wooded settings.

Case in point is the dormer home Windy Heights, which certainly must be a lot less windy than when first christened and built.

Dating most likely to the early 1990s, on a tiered southerly aspect acre site, it is a detached, four-bedroomed dormer home with just over 2,000 sq ft of space, all very well-kept.

It is new to the market with auctioneer Michael O’Donovan of Sherry FitzGerald, at €550,000, and he says it is a great family home, ideal for those who want space for children, dogs and themselves to spread out in.

The gardens are well-landscaped, but there’s still more space for those who want a project – there’s probably enough space for a tennis court or croquet lawn in the lowermost section of tiered gardens, and some nice wooded pathways.

A steep drive snakes down to the front of the house, with easy parking, but really, it is the back of the house that holds all of the good rooms, set up for light and views.

Left of the entry hall, is a large living room that could, conceivably, be knocked through the rear utility to flood the space with more light, and the other end of the house has a double aspect family room to show the way. Mid-ships is a big kitchen/dining room, with a recently upgraded fit-out, including great beech units and granite worktops.

There’s also a compact study/home office, utility, guest loo, en suite master bedroom with an excellent entire gable wall of built-ins, and a main family bathroom with jet bath.

Some of the present decor is on the dark side with strong, evening colours, and teak doors internally (while a badge of quality joinery) also combine to tone down the back portion and landing, but that’s a detail easily addressed.

Other than that, this solid package offers a very good new kitchen, good bathrooms, good inside space, great outdoor space, and a trading-up location, a 10 minute drive from Cork city and Glanmire. It should move away nicely.
