Scorsese does it again with 'Shutter Island'
Friday, March 12, 2010 - 02:43 PM
Director: Martin Scorsese
Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Kingsley, Mark Ruffalo, Michelle Williams
The return of what has become a fine partnership brings us another outstanding performance from DiCaprio and something of a directing departure for Scorsese.
It is a welcome one however in this strong, frightening thriller packed with twists and turns.
DiCaprio plays US Marshall Teddy Daniels who arrives on the remote New England island of the title to investigate the disappearance from the local hospital for the criminally insane of a murderess, who might be hiding out on the island.
But as his investigation gathers momentum it becomes clear that the hospital authorities have secrets they want to keep, a situation made even worse when other criminal inmates escape during a storm.
Scorsese packs into the film flashbacks and dream sequences that blur reality and otherwise and DiCaprio, with another-career enhancing performance, gives his favourite director all he has.
